Compare the2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5VS 2025 MINI Countryman SE

For enhanced safety, the front and rear seat shoulder belts of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The MINI Countryman SE doesn’t offer pretensioners for its rear seat belts.

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The MINI Countryman SE doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

Both the Ioniq 5 and Countryman SE have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Ioniq 5 has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The Countryman SE’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

Both the Ioniq 5 and the Countryman SE have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 has achieved the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) highest rating of “Top Safety Pick Plus” for the 2024 model year. This distinction is based on its exceptional performance in IIHS’ rigorous battery of safety tests. Specifically, it earned a “Good” rating in the latest, more stringent moderate overlap front crash test, a “Good” result in the updated side impact test, and an “Acceptable” score in the revised pedestrian crash prevention test. The Countryman SE has not yet been evaluated by the IIHS for 2024.

The Ioniq 5 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Countryman SE’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 10,000 miles sooner.

Hyundai’s powertrain warranty covers the Ioniq 5 6 years and 50,000 miles longer than MINI covers the Countryman SE. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the Countryman SE ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are almost 9 times as many Hyundai dealers as there are MINI dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Ioniq 5’s warranty.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Hyundai vehicles are better in initial quality than MINI vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Hyundai third in initial quality, above the industry average. With 20 more problems per 100 vehicles, MINI is ranked 11th.

The Ioniq 5’s optional electric motors produces 12 more horsepower (320 vs. 308) and 82 lbs.-ft. more torque (446 vs. 364) than the Countryman SE’s electric motors. The Ioniq 5 N’s standard electric motors produces 333 more horsepower (641 vs. 308) and 204 lbs.-ft. more torque (568 vs. 364) than the Countryman SE’s electric motors.

The Ioniq 5 N’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the Countryman SE are solid, not vented.

For better traction, the Ioniq 5 has larger standard tires than the Countryman SE (235/55R19 vs. 225/55R18). The Ioniq 5 N’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Countryman SE (275/35R21 vs. 245/45R19).

The Ioniq 5 N’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Countryman SE’s optional 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Ioniq 5 N has standard 21-inch wheels. The Countryman SE’s largest wheels are only 19-inches.

The Ioniq 5 has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The Countryman SE doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

The Ioniq 5 offers an available driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The Countryman SE’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Ioniq 5’s wheelbase is 12.1 inches longer than on the Countryman SE (118.1 inches vs. 106 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Ioniq 5 is 2.5 inches wider in the front and 2.9 inches wider in the rear than the track on the Countryman SE.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs up to about 450 pounds less than the MINI Countryman SE.

The front grille of the Ioniq 5 uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Countryman SE doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The Ioniq 5 has 1.3 inches more front legroom, 2 inches more front shoulder room, 1.3 inches more rear headroom, 4.3 inches more rear legroom and 2.9 inches more rear shoulder room than the Countryman SE.

The Ioniq 5 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Countryman SE with its rear seat up (26.3 vs. 24.8 cubic feet). The Ioniq 5 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Countryman SE with its rear seat folded (58.5 vs. 56.2 cubic feet).

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Ioniq 5 has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the Countryman SE only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Ioniq 5 has standard extendable sun visors. The Countryman SE doesn’t offer extendable visors.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Ioniq 5 to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Countryman SE doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

Both the Ioniq 5 and the Countryman SE have standard heated front seats. The Ioniq 5 SEL/Limited/XRT also has standard heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the Countryman SE.

Standard air-conditioned seats in the Ioniq 5 Limited/N keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The Countryman SE doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

Compared to the MINI Countryman SE, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 eliminates the need for separate garage door openers and associated risks of losing, breaking, or having dead batteries with its optional integrated Homelink® universal remote controlled from the rear view mirror.

The Ioniq 5 Limited has a 115-volt a/c outlet on the rear seat, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The Countryman SE doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The Ioniq 5 is available in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The Countryman SE doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

The Ioniq 5 was chosen as a Car and Driver’s “Top Ten” for 2025 and 3 more times in the last 4 years. The Countryman SE has never been chosen by Car and Driver in their “10Best” issue.
