Compare the2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5VS 2025 Genesis Electrified G80

When descending a steep, off-road slope, the Ioniq 5’s standard Downhill Brake Control allows you to creep down safely. The Electrified G80 doesn’t offer Downhill Brake Control.

Both the Ioniq 5 and the Electrified G80 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

Side impacts caused 23% of all road fatalities in 2018, down from 29% in 2003, when the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety introduced its side barrier test. In order to continue improving vehicle safety, the IIHS has started using a more severe side impact test: 37 MPH (up from 31 MPH), with a 4180-pound barrier (up from 3300 pounds). J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Hyundai vehicles are better in initial quality than Genesis vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Hyundai third in initial quality, above the industry average. With 22 more problems per 100 vehicles, Genesis is ranked 13th.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Hyundai vehicles are more reliable than Genesis With 2 fewer problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, J.D. Power ranks Hyundai higher than Genesis.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2024 Auto Issue reports that Hyundai vehicles are more reliable than Genesis vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Hyundai 7 places higher in reliability than Genesis.

The Ioniq 5 N’s standard electric motors produces 276 more horsepower (641 vs. 365) and 52 lbs.-ft. more torque (568 vs. 516) than the Electrified G80’s electric motors.

As tested in Car and Driver the Ioniq 5 N electric motors is faster than the Genesis Electrified G80:

For better traction, the Ioniq 5 N’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Electrified G80 (275/35R21 vs. 245/45R19).

The Ioniq 5 N’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Electrified G80’s 45 series front and 40 series rear tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Ioniq 5 N has standard 21-inch wheels. The Electrified G80’s largest wheels are only 19-inches.

The Ioniq 5 has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The Electrified G80 doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

The Ioniq 5 N handles at .96 G’s, while the Electrified G80 pulls only .90 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 200 to 900 pounds less than the Genesis Electrified G80.

The Ioniq 5 is 1 foot, 1.7 inches shorter than the Electrified G80, making the Ioniq 5 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The front grille of the Ioniq 5 uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Electrified G80 doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The Ioniq 5 has 5.8 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Electrified G80 (106.5 vs. 100.7).

The Ioniq 5 has 2.1 inches more rear headroom, 3.5 inches more rear legroom and .6 inches more rear shoulder room than the Electrified G80.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Ioniq 5’s rear seats recline. The Electrified G80’s rear seats don’t recline.

The Ioniq 5’s standard rear seats fold to accommodate long and bulky cargo. The Electrified G80 doesn’t offer folding rear seats, only a ski pass-through.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Ioniq 5 has a standard rear wiper. The Electrified G80 doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducts detailed tests on headlights for their range both straight ahead and in curves and to be certain they don’t exceed acceptable amounts of glare to oncoming drivers. The Ioniq 5’s headlights were rated “Good” to “Acceptable” by the IIHS, while the Electrified G80’s headlights are rated “Acceptable.”

The Ioniq 5 is available in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The Electrified G80 doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

The Ioniq 5 was chosen as a Car and Driver’s “Top Ten” for 2025 and 3 more times in the last 4 years. The Electrified G80 has never been chosen by Car and Driver in their “10Best” issue.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 outsold the Genesis G80 by over six to one during 2023.
